List of terms commonly referred to during the special education process
For
a child to receive special education services, he/she must first
receive an educational diagnosis. Diagnoses are determined according to
eligibility criteria mandated by the state of Missouri. Testing
conducted by the diagnostic team, as well as input from
parents/guardians and any service providers helps to determine
eligibility

Upon
completion of diagnostic testing, the team will compile a written
report containing all of the information that was gathered. The
information in this report will be orally explained at the eligibility
conference. A written summation will be mailed within two weeks of
testing.

An explanation of the special education process.
A
referral to initiate the special education process can be made by
parents, through the DIAL 3 screening process or from a First Steps
service coordinator. A letter and a copy of the procedural safeguards
will be mailed within five days of the referral. The next step in the
process is a meeting with the diagnostic team for data review. An
invitation stating the date and time for data review will be mailed to
you. This meeting is typically a face-to-face meeting to discuss any
concerns with your childs development and to determine if an evaluation
with the school district is warranted. If an evaluation is scheduled,
you will bring your child to the John Cary Early Childhood Center to
work and play with the diagnostic team. Evaluation results and
diagnoses will be shared with you that same day. If your child is
deemed eligible for special education services, you will be contacted by
an ECSE teacher or therapist to schedule an Individualized Education
Plan (IEP) meeting. Your child can begin services once the IEP is
completed.
